At the other side of Antarctica, the Russian expedition ship, MV Akademik Shokalskiy, was stuck in thick pack ice for 10 days. On our side, aboard the MV Academik Ioffe, we were nearing the Antarctic Circle with a similar situation literally building up around us. You see, the problem wasn't heading south towards the Circle ... it was the danger of getting locked in pack ice on the return.
So after passing Port Charcot, we trudged slowly through the ice, zigzagging through icebergs. With an occasional Weddell Seal pair gliding through the water, I was mesmerized by the play of water, ice and light. It was nearing dinnertime when the light turned this incredible golden yellow.
Even though the Captain made the right call in stopping our trek just shy of crossing the Circle, these sights more than made up for what could have been. Our southernmost coordinates were: 65° 22' S, 65° 59′ 85″ W
